Sun, Sand, and Surf: Experience the Iconic Grande Plage Guide
Welcome to the Grande Plage, the heart and soul of Biarritz! This iconic beach, with its elegant striped tents and stunning views, is a must-visit for anyone traveling to this charming coastal town. Whether you're looking to soak up the sun, catch some waves, or simply stroll along the promenade, the Grande Plage offers something for everyone. It's the perfect place to experience the glamour and beauty that Biarritz is famous for. The Grande Plage has a rich history, dating back to the 19th century when Empress Eugénie and Napoleon III chose Biarritz as their summer residence. This royal patronage transformed the town into a fashionable resort, attracting wealthy visitors from all over Europe. The Grande Plage became the center of this social scene, with its grand hotels, casinos, and elegant beachside amenities. Today, it still retains its air of sophistication and charm. The Grande Plage offers a wide range of activities for tourists. Surfing is a popular pastime, with several surf schools offering lessons for all levels. You can also rent a paddleboard, kayak, or simply relax on the beach and enjoy the sun. The beach is lined with cafes, restaurants, and shops, offering plenty of options for dining and entertainment. While not directly on the beach, the surrounding area boasts numerous restaurants serving traditional Basque cuisine, including fresh seafood, pintxos (Basque tapas), and gateau Basque (a traditional almond cake).
